My Dear Kevin,

A Letter to My Son Kevin: Faith, Kindness, and the Joy of Growing Up

My dear Kevin,

I love you so much. I wrote this letter for you to read when you’re older—especially if you ever feel lost or need comfort. I hope my words wrap around you like a warm embrace, reminding you that you’re always supported and loved.

You are a very special boy. Your father hails from the Netherlands, and your mother from Indonesia. Right now, you’re growing up with your mother’s family in Lombok, the same island where you entered the world on October 22, 2014, at Puskemas Hospital in Cakranegara. I still remember holding you for the first time: so tiny, wrapped in a soft blanket, with everyone in the room beaming. That moment remains one of the happiest of my life.

Your life means everything to our family and me. You bring joy and hope to everyone you meet. Never forget how important and loved you are.

Embracing Faith with Kindness and Curiosity

As you grow, you’ll learn about our faith. Being Muslim means believing in Allah and following the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. Above all, it means being kind, working hard, loving others, and caring for those around you—these are the true guides on your path.

The world can sometimes feel confusing or scary. People might act unkindly due to misunderstandings or differing beliefs. But true faith chooses peace and respect for everyone, regardless of who they are.

Always be gentle and kind. If you see someone hurting or facing unfairness, respond with compassion and stand for what’s right—never by causing harm.

Learning religion is like tackling a big, special book or a new puzzle game. Read the instructions carefully, ask questions, and learn from those who know. The Quran is your guide, but understanding comes from wise teachers and curiosity. Read without grasping, and mistakes follow—just like rushing into a game. Stay eager, learn deeply, and seek help.

Other holy books, like the Bible, guide people toward God and goodness, too. Respect all beliefs; everyone deserves kindness and understanding.

Caring for Our World and Each Other

At its core, religion calls us to nurture the earth—plants, animals, every person. Share food, water, and love. This honors God, no matter one’s origins or faith. We all share rights and duties to protect our world.

Love, Family, and Dreams for Your Future

One day, strong emotions may lead you to love. Treat that person with respect, kindness, and loyalty. If you build a family, cherish and protect them. Feeling sad or confused? Return to this letter for solace.

I have big hopes for you, Kevin. I picture you playing football in the kampong, laughter echoing as the sun sets. Keep finding joy in simple things, mastering new skills, and dreaming big. Here in Lombok, I’m building a project to aid kampong children with education, music, sports, and family support. Join me someday to lift our community.

Work hard in school, choose true friends, stay loyal and honest. Some may dismiss education or growth—ignore them. Be patient, pray, and good will follow.

Kevin, I trust you completely. You are my son, my teammate, my pride. Travel with God, my beloved boy. I’ll always love you and be here—no matter what.

With all my love,
Your father
